Best Sources of Iodine for Hashimotos – Thyroid Disease

Most Hashimotos sufferers are confused about what the disease really is, how it works and what your body actually needs to heal. I know I was very confused. I was not correctly diagnosed for the first several years. It wasn’t until I actually learned what it was and what my particular needs were that I learned about iodine.

One of my best friends, early on in my struggle, gave me a bag of organic iodine power. She said it would help. I searched and sure enough, everything pointed to iodine helping your thyroid. But it only made my swelling and fatigue much worse. I didn’t see progress and healing until after I learned about heavy metal toxicity and iodine displacement. I didn’t know I had a chronic swing of fast to slow and the one environmental factor interfering. Most doctors don’t go deep with a full spectrum thyroid test. They only test your blood TSH and t3 and t4. They don’t test for antibodies to see if your immune system has launched an all out attack.

The doctor simply told me to just take a progesterone supplement or use a progesterone cream. She mentioned my ketones in my blood and said to just keep doing what I’m doing. She never gave me any indication I needed iodine or if I didn’t. I honestly thought I had wasted my time. My greatest fear was that I had cancer!

Almost every iodine supplement I tried only made my goiter swell more! Why was that? I was so confused! It wasn’t until my studies in Functional Medicine that I realized I was actually damaging my thyroid by taking iodine supplements.

What is Hashimotos?

Hashimotos is an autoimmune version of thyroid disease. Unlike Hypothyroidism where the thyroid is slow, not making enough active t3, or hyperthyroidism where your thyroid is to fast, making too much active t3, Hashimoto’s swings back and forth between the two. A goiter forms because your body is literally launching an all out attack on your thyroid tissues. Sometimes, viruses or heavy metals can get lodged in the thyroid. Sometimes, however, you could be experiencing something called iodine displacement.

Why do we need Iodine?

Your thyroid uses iodine as an essential nutrient to make thyroid hormones. Most people in America are not iodine deficient. But are they?

According to Thyroid.org, an estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Up to 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition. Women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.

Since 1924, the US has been adding iodine to our table salt. Many times an iodine deficiency doesn’t show up on a blood test or will show up despite the fact that any iodine supplements only make they thyroid swell more! Why is that?

The answer is in the chemistry of the type of iodine.

Nature made iodine but not iodide. Many chemicals in our air, our water, food and other external sources are laced with a group of chemicals called halogens. Halogens are elements that are salt forming when they react with metals. These elements include Chlorine, Bromine, Florine, Iodine and Astatine. Iodide is the salt resulting in iodine and a metal and not actually the same as iodine.

Often when you eat iodized salt or take an “iodine” supplement, it is actually iodide. It is usually bonded to potassium or calcium and will block your thyroid from absorbing and using the natural version that your body needs, iodine. In addition, sometimes the iodide version, being negatively charged, is bonded to heavy metals or created from nutrients containing heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium or silver nitrate.

When you are taking an iodine supplement that is actually iodide, in addition to the bombardment you get from environmental poisons, you end up with an overload of heavy metals being taken up into your thyroid that harm and destroy the soft tissues and the iodide along with other halogens block natural iodine.

 How to Fix it

Nature always has a way to heal itself! The Master Creator knew we would need something for everything! Herbs are amazing and have the full spectrum of nutrients, vitamins and minerals to symbiotically heal our bodies and the systems as a whole, not just turn off the symptom like Rx do.

Whenever you take a lab created supplement, it is not structurally the same as nature created and your body doesn’t know what to do with it. Either your body will store it or flush it. This can cause toxicity of that artificial nutrient or a breakdown of the systems it’s meant to heal. Instead of it being an aid, it becomes a toxin.

If your filters (liver and kidneys) are not detoxing properly or are overloaded due to poor diet, lifestyle, chemical influences or stress, it could trigger a spiral effect.

Positive Herbs

Chlorella

In science, positive attracts negative everytime. Chlorella is a single celled blue green algea with a positive charge, that literally pulls out heavy metals in your blood, brain, soft tissues, your bones and marrow!

According to recent research, toxic metals such as silver nitrate, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are ubiquitous, have no beneficial role in human homeostasis, and contribute to noncommunicable chronic diseases including chronic intestinal permeability. Intestinal permeability (leaky gut) is key to healing autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto’s.

Cilantro Benefits

Cilantro

Cilantro, a leafy cousin to parsley, is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, and the leaves also have folate, potassium, and manganese. They have been used for years as a natural healing and chelating herb and is mentioned in the bible:

“The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.” Exodus 16:31.
“The manna was like coriander seed and looked like resin.” Numbers 11: 7

Cilantro when used together with chlorella, bind to heavy metals and are removed from the body through our excretory system. Chlorella and cilantro can detoxify other neurotoxins such as phthalates, plasticizers and insecticides.

To Iodine, or Not To Iodine?

As with the case of goiter, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be triggered by iodine levels. It’s best to work with a Holistic Health Care Professional to know exactly what your body needs. Coriander(cilantro seeds) essential oil is the most potent form of plant based theraputic medicine that will not only fight inflammation and any possibility of cancer but also help to destroy any viruses. It naturally heals the thyroid and gives you the gift of health and vitality. Coriander seeds themselves contain thiamine and niacin along with Vitamins K and C. These can help regulate the thyroid activity and bring the body back to normal.

In addition to balancing hormones, the best part about cilantro and chlorella is their natural levels of bio-available iodine. It is recommended to take a teaspoon of Chlorella three times a day for theraputic healing and detoxification. Juicing vegies daily with cilantro, dandelion, turmeric, ginger and beets and mixing in chlorella is sure to give a superpower boost to your healing arsenal.

Dairy is an excellent source of iodine

Dairy and eggs are excellent sources of iodine, but one note of caution: make sure they are grass fed. Don’t be fooled by “cage free” and “organic” as they may still be GMO and be from lives stock fed a great deal of grains full of poisons. Grain fed livestock usually are given corn, flax and soy, which are intensely estrogenic and heavily doused with pesticides. The more poisons you take in, the harder it will be to heal.
